The Tan Girl shares general information, tips and product picks about tanning. Nothing on this website or in our newsletter is medical advice, and it isn't a substitute for advice from a qualified health professional. Everyone's skin is different, so what works for one person may not suit another.

UV, the sun and sunbeds

UV light from the sun and from sunbeds can damage your skin. The NHS says there's no safe or healthy way to get a tan, and that sunbeds and sunlamps can be more dangerous than natural sunlight because they use a concentrated source of UV radiation. The health risks it lists include skin cancer, premature skin ageing, sunburn and eye irritation. Read the NHS advice on sunscreen, sun safety and sunbeds.

• In the UK, it's illegal for anyone under 18 to use a sunbed, including in tanning salons, beauty salons, leisure centres, gyms and hotels.
• A fake tan doesn't protect your skin from the sun. The NHS recommends sunscreen of at least SPF 30 with at least 4-star UVA protection, as well as shade and suitable clothing.
• We don't recommend tanning injections or nasal sprays, such as Melanotan II. These products are not authorised in the UK.

Self-tan and spray tan

• Self-tan and spray tan products can cause skin reactions in some people.
• Before you use a new product, do a patch test on a small area of skin and follow the instructions on the label, including how long to wait before using it more widely.
• Check the ingredients if you have allergies or sensitive skin.
• Stop using any product that irritates your skin.

Skin concerns

If you have a skin condition, react badly to a product, or notice a change to your skin, such as a new mole or a mole that changes size, shape or colour, speak to your GP or ask about seeing a dermatologist. For urgent medical help, call NHS 111. In an emergency, call 999.
